Why washing machines develop smells
Common causes include detergent and softener residue, mould around a door seal, wet laundry left inside, stagnant water, a partially blocked drain path or contamination in the dispenser. A sewage-like smell may relate to drainage or plumbing, while a burning smell requires immediate caution.
Cleaning or mechanical fault?
Routine manufacturer-approved cleaning can help with residue and mould. If water remains in the machine, the smell returns quickly, or drainage is slow, the underlying cause may require pump, hose or drainage-system diagnosis.
Stop using the machine when
If the smell is electrical, burning or accompanied by smoke, heat, sparking or tripped power, stop the cycle and isolate power if it is safe. Do not continue testing the appliance.
